In free practice 1 Alonso got 7th and Ericsson got 13th. In the second practice session both Alonso and Ericsson improved to 5th and 7th respectively, and finally in the 3rd practice session Alonso improved once again to 4th while Ericsson got 12th.
In qualifying Ericsson unfortunately went out in Q1 in 17th with both McLarens coming 18th and 20th. Alonso got 7th in Q1 being 0.459 off Bottas in 1st. Alonso then went out in Q2 in 13th.
After a disapointing qualifying both drivers were very eager to get into the points. Sunday started off with McLaren missing their submission for their 3rd time this season. Alonso got a excellent start but couldn't get passed anyone going into turn 1. On lap 3 Alonso pulled an amazing double overtake in the curved section between turn 14 and 15 brining him to 11th. It wasn't until lap 8 Alonso pushed past Button for 10th. Ericsson gets passed Kyvat on lap 14 for 14th. On lap 16 Maldonado and Button collided and Button had to make a pit stop after that, which took Ericsson up to 13th. Both Alonso and Ericsson made moves on lap 22 as Alonso overtook Nasr for 9th and Ericsson overtook Grosjean for 12th. Bottas drove into the gravel on lap 27 which forced him to retire from 5th, that promoted Alonso to 8th and Ericsson to 11th. On lap 32 Alonso overtook Perez for 7th. Then on lap 34 Ricciardo retired from 3rd which took Alonso to 5th and Ericsson to 9th. Both drivers stayed in their respective posistions.
After France Sauber now has scored more points in 9 races in 2016 than the whole season of 2015 which is a big step forward.
